reminder: their action to your boundary is not your mistake

How to Hold the Line When People Push Back

HEALING HORIZONS

You finally did it. You found the perfect words, managed your racing heart, and actually set the boundary. But instead of a mature, understanding response, you were met with a heavy sigh, a passive-aggressive comment, or a massive guilt trip.

The Raw Truth

I see this exact moment break people completely down. every. single. time. The second we receive pushback on a new limit, our instinct is to assume we did something wrong, we sound too harsh, or we are being a terrible human being. We interpret their negative reaction as evidence that our boundaries was a mistake, when it is actually the ultimate confirmation that the boundary was desperately needed much sooner. I am incredibly firm in my own boundaries these days because I know the alternative is self-abandonment, but I still remember how terrifying it feels when people double down just to get you to fold back into your old, compliant patterns.

Behind The Couch

  • The extinction burst: In psychology, when you stop reinforcing a behavior, it often gets worse and louder before it goes away; when you say no, people will test the limit fiercely one last time to see if you will crack.
  • The relationship audit: The only people who get angry or defensive when you set basic boundaries are the exact people who were heavily benefiting from you having none at all.
  • The emotional separation: Their discomfort is theirs to manage, not yours to fix; you are responsible for communicating your limits clearly and kindly, but you are not responsible for their emotional reaction to those limits.

First-Aid Kit

Here is your personal survival guide for holding the line during an extinction burst. Copy these phrases and keep them close for the moments when the pushback feels too heavy to carry:

  • When they try to guilt-trip you: "I understand you are frustrated or disappointed by this change, but I am still keeping this limit to protect my own capacity."
  • When they claim you are being uncaring: "I love you and care about this relationship deeply, which is why I am being honest about what I can and cannot take on right now."
  • When they try to debate your boundary: "This is not a negotiation or an argument. I am simply letting you know what my availability is so we can plan accordingly."
  • When you need to step away from the pushback: "I can see this conversation is getting tense. I am going to step away for now, and we can reconnect when we are both feeling a bit more regulated."

Look back at who you were a few weeks ago, celebrate how far you have come, the limits you have named, and the space you have reclaimed for your nervous system. Hit reply and share one boundary victory you are incredibly proud of celebrating today, no matter how small it might seem!
